Service & Sacrifice

Staff Sergeant George A. Hoagland served with Detachment B-52, Project Delta, 5th Special Forces Group. He was assigned to Recon Team CAPITOL during Operation 2-66 in the An Lao Valley.

On January 29, 1966, RT CAPITOL came under intense enemy fire when engaged by a superior Viet Cong force. SSG Hoagland was among the first men hit in the initial burst. Despite being severely wounded in both arms, he attempted to continue fighting.

SSG Hoagland died of his wounds during the engagement. He was one of four members of RT CAPITOL killed that day. His body was recovered by a Delta reaction force that fought its way to the team's position. Only two members of the six-man team survived the An Lao Valley engagement.
