Sergeant Charles F. Prevedel served with Recon Team 6, Detachment B-52, Project Delta, 5th Special Forces Group.
On April 14, 1969, SGT Prevedel was a member of a six-man reconnaissance team led by SSG Charles V. Newton, inserted into the mountains of Thua Thien Province near the Laotian border. The patrol included three Americans and three Vietnamese Special Forces troopers.
Three days into the mission, on April 17, 1969, the team reported they were under attack by a larger enemy force. They radioed for emergency extraction and air strikes. Radio contact was then lost. Thunderstorms prevented rescue aircraft from reaching the area.
SGT Prevedel was killed in action alongside his teammates. Their remains were eventually recovered decades later, bringing closure to their families after years of uncertainty.
