Stand Down after Operation 3-70 (Delta Dagger)
FOB Mai Loc

Narrative:
After nearly a month at Mai Loc, we got a two week stand down in Nha Trang. We still had not received the final word on the Project closing down. We knew it was coming but not when.

Narrative for photos 9 - 12:
There is a sad ending to this story. A couple of days later, Sprouse and I were sitting on the front steps of Badolati barracks. It was early and we were the only ones awake, luckily. The ducks were grazing in the grass and Douche Bag was on guard. Roy asked me what they ate and I said bugs, seeds, grain, etc. He said they looked hungry, so one of us got a bag of PIR (dehydrated) rice and scattered it in the grass. The ducks ate every grain of it. It had rained the night before and there were puddles in the sidewalk. The ducks got thirsty right away and drank from the puddles. They started blowing up like balloons. When we saw them start keeling over, we knew we had really screwed up. They were suffocating. Douch Bag was frantic, going from one to another using her nose to stand them up but they kept falling over like fuzzy yellow balls, legs kicking in the air. I told Sprouse, "Do you know what Stick will do to us if he finds out ?" Roy said he wouldn't tell if I wouldn't. We shook on it and for years, neither one of us ever told anyone about how the ducks died. It was attributed to rat poison which was in boxes all over the compound.
