This clearing was in a neighboring valley to the east of A Shau. Notice the heavy jungle with very few LZs; clearings. This worked to the advantage of the enemy. He didn't have to spread his troops thin to cover them and prevent infiltration by recon teams. The only cleared areas were in the bottom of the valley itself.
