Project Delta Detachment B-52

You've never lived until you've almost died. For those who have fought for it, life has a flavor the protected shall never know.
Nha Trang, Vietnam • 1964 – 1970

Their Story

Project Delta was the first and most distinguished special reconnaissance unit of the Vietnam War. Small teams of U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers, alongside Vietnamese Special Forces, were sent deep behind enemy lines on missions the government would deny for over three decades.

Never numbering more than 100 Americans at any one time, Detachment B-52 became the most highly decorated unit of its size in the entire conflict. Their legacy laid the foundation for modern special operations forces, including the unit that bears their name: Delta Force.

Featured Commander

Lt. Col. Charles "Chuck" Allen III

Callsign: "Big 'Un"

Major Chuck Allen served with Project Delta for two years and commanded the unit during what many considered its peak operational period. General William C. Westmoreland himself knew Allen by the callsign "Big 'Un."

Under Allen's leadership, Delta's recon section operated twelve teams deep behind enemy lines, conducting the reconnaissance missions that shaped the course of operations across every corps tactical zone in South Vietnam. His leadership set the standard that would influence special operations for generations to come.
