Narrative
The operation that started with the FOB at Kham Duc was cancelled.
We had barely gotten started setting up when it was called off.
Never did know why. Kham Duc had been used as a launch site for
"Agency" operations before. The first night there, we slept in the
camp, in an almost deserted team house. I have never seen so many
rats and snakes in one place in all my life. The camp was very
vulnerable and in an improbable location. It was surrounded by
mountains, the ridgeline at the end of the runway had to be trimmed
down to make it safer for the take off and landing of aircraft. We
did get probed one night and a VN Ranger was killed when a 60mm
mortar put up illumination. The empty sleeve from one of the flares
came down and hit him right on top of the helmet. It came out under
his chin. The other Ranger in the foxhole with him went berserk. |
